Copy-free transition

This is one of best  data migration technology developed by Netapp using 7MTT …

Copy-free transition ( CFT) reduces the migration cost by the reuse of 7-Mode disk shelves. The  transition is faster because no data copy is required thereby saving a considerable time copying data across disks. In copy-free transition, we disconnect all disk shelves from a 7-Mode HA pair and connect them to an HA pair in the target cluster.

Its done in phases, for which we would be using 7MTT tool.

Import of 7-Mode disk shelves can be done in the following ways:

  • Import disk shelves from a 7-Mode HA pair to a new HA pair in a new cluster.
  • Import disk shelves from a 7-Mode HA pair to a new HA pair in an existing cluster that has additional data-serving nodes.

The target HA pair must not be serving any data and must include only the root aggregates. Other nodes in the cluster can be serving data.

  • Import disk shelves from an HA pair that contains volumes in a volume SnapMirror relationship.

You must manually create the cluster peer relationship after transition; however, a rebaseline transfer is not required and you can retain the SnapMirror relationship after transition.

The metadata of the 7-Mode aggregates and volumes is converted to the clustered Data ONTAP format by the 7-Mode Transition Tool. The time taken for this conversion is not dependent on the size of the aggregates and volumes. For example, the time take for converting a 10 GB aggregate to clustered Data ONTAP format is the same as the time required for converting a 100 TB aggregate.CFT can be done only by taking a complete downtime.  One downside of the CFT is that we cannot rollback to 7 mode automatically but we have an option to do it manually.
